Known Sperm Donor Considerations and Information

Minimal things to do/consider when using a fresh known donor may include the following:

  1. Make sure that your donor has good sperm by getting a semen analysis done. We've seen many people end up spending money and emotion on cycles using a known donor that has poor or terrible quality sperm. Getting an analysis on your potential donor should be easy to get ordered and should run about one hundred dollars or so.
  2. Make sure that your donor abstains from ejacuation for 2-7 days prior to your anticipated insemination date. This time frame should provide you with the best overall sperm specimen from your donor. Abstinence of less than 2 days will provide fewer sperm and specimens produced after more than 7 days most likely will have more dead sperm.
  3. Make sure that you are comfortable with the donors family medical history, and your donors' exposure to disease. Prudence would have one test their donor for HIV, HTLV, & Hepatitis at a bare minimum, although that can't guarantee you the safety of the specimens. To be more complete in testing, you may wish to test your donor more like a commercial donor. See Donor Standards.
  4. Sterile supplies that you might need for collection and insemination, as well as supplies for shipping sperm overnight are available in complete kits right here in our Online Store.
  5. Make yourself aware of state law. (Click here for Known Donor Legalities)
