Insemination Kits for use with Frozen Donor Sperm

You may find the following web page a good source of information concerning home inseminations. http://www.fertilityplus.org/faq/homeinsem.html
WARNING: Never try to place anything into or past the cervix unless instructed to do so by your health care provider. Never place raw, or unwashed semen into the cervix or into the uterus. Uterine reaction to prostaglandin found in raw semen may cause severe uterine cramping, possibly necessitating emergency medical attention. Frozen semen specimens contain heat inactivated chicken egg yolk. Do not use our donor sperm specimens for insemination if you have a known allergy to egg yolk unless you have your physician wash the specimens free of the cryoprotectant media that contains the egg proteins prior to use.

To make your insemination easy, we offer a kit that you can order with your donor sperm specimens for only $10 per set. The kit is made up of a three piece set of sterile disposable supplies consisting of a softcup, syringe, and catheter as seen below. This kit provides you with two different options for your insemination. You can place the sperm into the soft cup, which will hold the sperm close to the cervix, or you can assemble the catheter to the syringe and use this assembly to deposit the sperm at the base of the cervix (see below).

Method 1, using the Syringe Catheter

If you have elected to use the syringe/catheter insemination method please follow these general instructions. Open the catheter and syringe. Place the catheter onto the end of the syringe fully as shown above. Pull back on the plunger drawing in a little air, then draw the semen into the syringe/catheter by placing the tip of the catheter all the way to the bottom of the vial of sperm and drawing back the syringe plunger handle slowly until the entire specimen has been suctioned into the syringe and catheter. Try to keep the plunger end of the syringe slightly elevated so the semen stays toward the catheter. Lay down with your hips slightly elevated. Slide the catheter into the vagina gently. The catheter has a rounded end and is very flexible. You may need to help guide the catheter with a finger from your other hand. Once the catheter is inserted next to the cervix depress the syringe plunger pushing out the semen. You may then remove the syringe/catheter but remain down with your hips elevated for twenty to thirty minutes. This allows maximum exposure of the sperm to the cervix and cervical mucous.

Method 2, using the Softcup

WARNING: Do not use the cup if you have ever had Toxic Shock Syndrome. Never reuse. Never wear more than four (4) hours.

Although the syringe catheter is the most popular way of inseminating with the donor sperm, the softcup has its place when you don't have the place or time to stay in a reclined position. The softcup will hold the specimen up close to the cervix. The cup will mold to your internal shape to create a personal fit. Its smooth non-irritating surface makes it easy to insert, wear and remove. Wash your hands prior to opening the purple packaging. We recommend sitting on the toilet with your knees apart. Hold the cup by the rim allowing the bottom of the cup to hang down. Place the semen into the bottom of the cup with the syringe-catheter assembly. Now squeeze the opposite sides of the cup together and insert, (keeping the rim pressed together), completely into the vagina. When you are sitting, your vaginal canal is horizontal, sloping slightly downward. Use your finger to push the cup downward and back as far as it will go. The cup cannot get lost inside you. It will slide into place under the cervix and behind the pubic bone much like a diaphragm. When inserted properly, you shouldn't feel the cup. To remove the cup we recommend sitting on the toilet with your knees apart. Insert your finger into the vagina and identify the pubic bone, the cup will be right behind it. Hook your finger under the rim. Slowly pull the cup out and dispose of in the trash. Do not flush the cup. You may wish to practice insertion of the cup prior to using it with the specimen.
